October 10th, 2007 - A fond remembrance: Hemanth (1991 batch, B Section)

The news about sudden and unexpected demise of Hemanth certainly might have struck many like a thunderbolt. I came to know about this sad news a year later after the incident. I was one of his childhood friends apart from being his classmate. It was strange that we got to meet each other in Bangalore after seven years. He had just started his new job as an architect and had come down to meet me in Jayanagar 4th block near RV Dental College. It was around 2:30pm and I still remember the place where we met. We sat on the railings sipped a cup of street side chai and smoked.
We talked about our school days. We spent an hour and saying good bye walked away. At that moment I didn’t even think that, I would be seeing him for the last time. We spent most of our time playing together up to class six, since we both stayed near by. He used stay in one of the row house in Narayanaswamy block.

Remembered moments -
*Behind his house, there was a kitchen garden; we once tried cooking rice in a brass vessel. Finally, we got caught by his mom! Then we were in class four.

*Dropping me home on his red cycle (a very small one).I used to stand behind holding him.

*Hanging out after attending mathematics tuitions at Aunty Parvathy’s house in the class seven.

*Healthy competition was always there between he and me in all the drawing and painting competitions. For sure either of us used to get a prize.

*A hardcore fan of Michael Jackson.

*A good swimmer.

Hemanth…You will remain in some corner of my heart, always!

October 10th, 2007 - My visit to the school – 08th Oct 2007

I had been to Mysore last weekend and one of the main purposes of my visit to Mysore this time was to spend some quality time in my school reliving all my memories and spending the same amount of time with the teachers.

As soon as I entered the school, I visited the principal’s room to ask for permission to enter the corridors of the school. Aunty Jameela is now the principal. The examns are going on and there are quite a lot of changes in the school.

For those whoever were in the school band and can remember the bandroom next to the indoor games room, it is now the “Midday Meals” room. For the 1997 batch (us), the same room was our classroom for the ‘A’ section in the 9th standard!

Whoever remembers Uncle Ranga for his brilliant rendering of Ulysses and Trojan and also for the wonderful songs like “Jhana Jhana Jhana, Jebu tumba hana, Melakke yetthi kelakka haakidre Dan Dana Dana” or “Saagi Munde, Bhaaratiyara hinde” in our indoor games room, I have some terrible news.. The Indoor Games Room is now christened as Seminar Hall and not much indoor games happens!

Our school quadrangle was being used for the midday meals on that day, courtesy examns being conducted in the midday meals room. The classroom facing the quadrangle for which we should have climbed a couple of stairs and which was the second standard class room for my batch is now the laboratory. The first standard class at the basement next to the quadrangle is now the TT Room and Computer Room.

I got another bit of bad news in the school. The two events which everyone in the school were eagerly waiting for from the beginning of the term are now not happening in the same year. The cultural evening and Open Day are happening in successive years. When asked for the reason, it was mentioned that the pressure of exams are taking its toll on the students and they are unable to participate.

Aunty Geetha is retiring on 31st January after 40 glorious years with CFTRI. I share this special bond with her which cannot be described in words. When I left the school, I had tears in my eyes just by realising that I’ll not be able to meet her anymore in the school!

I met Aunty Lokamatha and as usual, went to the library to again notice, to my disappointment, that the entire library is revamped and there are not many students who prefer books these days! I was one of the students who had a practice of reading more than one book per week and I could be seen anytime in the library!

I met Aunty Sathi and was about to blurt out an apology or a confession that we had given her a lot of trouble, but at the last moment, decided against it in the better interests of her mood. I met Aunty Padma, Aunty Deenamma, Aunty Annie, Prema Aunty, Uncle Mohan, Puttamadu and many other teachers, but they were all busy with examination duty and invigilation related works.

At the end of my visit, I was returning with many a poignant memories of my school and having spent more than 2 hours in a place which i can boldly call as MINE and to which I can relate myself as heart and soul,  I felt that it was one Mysore trip which was worth it.
